Let's Hear it for the Boy

Aug 12, 2011

Because I've been talking about romance this week, I've been thinking a lot about my husband. I am really almost as cheesy as my teenage self, and my husband still makes me feel like a giggly girl sometimes. Our relationship, of course, goes deeper than that. In fact, my husband is one of the biggest supporters of my writing dream.

For a few years before and after I got married, I wasn't writing much. I worked on revising my first novel sometimes, and I wrote a few short stories, but I wasn't really focused on my writing goals. But my husband knew I loved writing, and the first Christmas after we had our son, he gave me the best Christmas present ever. A book by my favorite fantasy author, Brandon Sanderson, that he had stood in line for an hour to get personally signed to me. Oh, and the information that Brandon was teaching a writing class starting in two weeks and that he welcomed anyone to come sit in. He encouraged me to go.

I was thrilled, and I went. For an entire semester, once a week, I got to play college student again. That class, as I've mentioned before, was the pivotal moment in my writing. I began to learn what I had to do if I wanted to get published, and I had the motivation to do it.

My husband not only encourages my writing, he listens to me gab about it for hours on end. He pats my head when I get emotional about rejections. He lets me bounce ideas off him and helps me brainstorm. He even gave me the inspiration for my current WIP.

In short, he's freakin' amazing. He, of course, does a lot more than support me with my writing, but I wanted to share that with my fellow writers today.

So, my friends, do you have someone who is your cheerleader in your writing? Let's hear about them!

P.S. Check out Ladies Who Critique, a new crit partner finding site that is awesome! I'm also happy to announce I'm part of a new Facebook page called The Write Advice, where you can get blog feeds of helpful craft advice. Check them out!

That "My husband not only encourages my writing, he listens to me gab about it for hours on end" sounded very, very familiar. Somehow he manages not to complain. :)

What a sweet husband you have! Mine is pretty supportive too--one of the first gifts he gave me was a fountain pen "for all the things I'd need to sign." Nowadays he plans regular evenings out with his friends to give me more time to write. We tried the reader/brainstormer thing together but that didn't work out so well ;)

My hubby is so supportive as well. He's the reason I even decided to pursue publication. Another support has been my sister. She reads everything I write. I mean, everything. She's read some pretty stupid stuff! lol But she has helped me a ton.:)

My husband is my cheerleader, too. The first birthday present he ever gave me was a book on how to get published. I had talked in generalities about trying, but he gave me the push to really go for it. I wouldn't be where I am without him. :)

Awesome. My husband is also wonderfully supportive, and it was him who got me to start too. My parents are also very supportive. I appreciate that so much.

Can't do it without the cheerleaders! My hubby is supportive, but doesn't really get the whole writing a book thing. He asked me once if I would be done in a week. Ha. But he smiles patiently when I say I'm leaving to write.

My husband is excellent at telling my when my characters are acting out of character. He is also an amazing editor or my work.

I love hearing about people loving their husbands. It makes me smile :)

I attended that same class twice, and I don't know where I'd be without it. :)

My husband listens to me talk about writing, too. He's very patient! :) And lately I've been bouncing ideas off him and he's been so helpful.

He's never read any of my novels, though. I haven't ever asked him to. I just know it would take him a long time and I'd be peering over his shoulder going, "Do you like it? What's wrong with it? Wait, wait, let me change that part!" :)

Shallee, I love this! Your husband sounds like an amazing, supportive, encouraging man. What a keeper.

I was talking with a friend the other day who would like to write about something close to her heart, and her husband won't "let her." It made me sad.

My husband is also my biggest cheerleader, and sometimes believes in me more than I believe in myself.

It's fantastic you have a solid support in your husband. I think writers need that amazing support. My hubby also supports me with my dreams and I really feel blessed to have him.

It makes the job of writing easier when those around you are firmly in your corner. My family has come to accept that I'm sometimes MIA while sitting at my desk.
