Healthy Writer's Club: When things don't go according to plan

Dec 14, 2012

So. Hi. Ahem.

I have nothing to report on the Healthy Writer's Club this week.

My goal of running a half-marathon in the spring is basically...not gonna happen. I'll most likely be pushing it back until fall. All my glorious plans have tanked. See, I didn't plan on several weeks of sickness. Or a surprise vacation. Or a baby that is five months old and STILL won't sleep more than 3-4 hours at a time. Thus, there are whole weeks where I haven't been able to run as much as I've wanted (or at all, like this week).

The perfectionist in me screams that I'm FAILING, but I'm doing my best to chant the mantra, "Plans change. It's okay. You're doing your best."

In fact, plans have changed quite a bit around my neck of the woods. As of last week, we made a sudden decision to move. At the end of the month. It's a good decision, but it's sure thrown a lot of things for a loop. Both writing and exercise are kind of on the back burner for the rest of the month.

And that's okay. Christmas is coming. So is life in a bigger apartment (with a SEPARATE ROOM for the baby. And a DISHWASHER. I'm dying.). Lots of great stuff is afoot. Plans have changed, but change doesn't mean fail. In fact, sometimes change can be what we need to succeed. It doesn't matter I have to push back my half-marathon by several months. I can still run it. It doesn't matter I have to put a hold on writing for a few weeks. It'll refresh me and get me into a stronger groove. In the end, it can be exciting when things don't go according to plan.

So, my friends, plans change. It's okay. You're doing your best. How do you cope when plans change? I'll see you all in January-- what with the move and the holidays, I don't expect I'll have much blogging time until then! Hope you all have a merry Christmas and wonderful holiday season!

It's good to be flexible enough to change. Good luck with the move and you'll soon be complaining in years to come about your child sleeping in as a teenager!

Good luck with it all Shallee - glad to know I'm not the only one riding the roller coaster - just hang on and enjoy the ride! :-)

Flexibility and making room for change is good. My health plans have gone haywire when I developed a cold and cough. Next week back to my original plans.

Good Luck with the move Shallee, and congratulations on the baby! Don't worry, you will get back on track with your fitness and writing goals.

Oh Shallee I've been there repeatedly this whole year.
Hugs!
I know how it feels to have to tell "the perfectionist" to quiet down.
Hopefully things will get back on track after the move.
Merry Christmas to you too.

Wonderful lady, you're doing great. I've been feeling so overwhelmed with everything lately, too, and working out was the first thing to go out the window, unfortunately. I hope you have a smooth move and a wonderful Christmas! XO

Uh yeah, I hear ya. My plans for a half marathon epically failed. Oh well, these chocolates that I am demolishing are sure good! :)

You have absolutely nailed it. Plans change, and your priorities need to shift to the things that are critically important--like that beautiful baby and your exciting plans to move. Half-marathons will never go away, and you know your novels will be waiting when you get back.

It takes a lot of strength to own it when your commitments shift, and it takes even more strength to realize that you can't do everything all the time. Your baby and hubby will thank you!

Happy Holidays, my friend!

Perfectionism is a curse and one I suffer from too, but alas I love your new mantra change -- sometimes good and sometimes bad, it's all part of the journey.
For this year I've started a new blog just for my health goals. It's over at http://www.hopesdreamsandnightmares.blogspot.com/

Although I will continue to update for THWC on my normal blog this is one where I'll post more often and hopefully have good information to share. As I learn the writing in and outs -- I will learn the diet / exercise ins and outs and somehow succeed at both!

Happy New Year -- hope your holidays were enjoyable, the baby is finally sleeping and your new goals for the New Year are all achieved by years end.

Getting caught up after so much rushing together before the holidays, then the holidays. Hope your move is under control. When hub was in the military, we moved A LOT. It's also a lot of work. Good luck to you also with your writing goals. Happy New Year!
