Lessons from Writing Conferences-- Your Name Really is Your Brand

Feb 17, 2011

So, I've made a little change to the blog. Or a big change, actually. You'll notice my blog name is no longer Life, the Universe, and Writing (that's now relegated to the sad position of tagline). And for good reason.

Today was the first day of BYU's sci fi/fantasy/horror writing conference: Life, the Universe, and Everything. It was exhausting, exhilarating, and inspiring. I made a few new friends, saw a few old ones, and learned something interesting.

I met someone I've so far only known through her blog. She thought she'd been to my blog as well, but couldn't remember my name. I mentioned the name of my blog, and she said, "Oh, yeah, I remember now."

You know what my immediate thought was? BLOGGER FAIL.
My writing blog, like many of yours, is for two main purposes: to share the writing journey with other writers, and to basically market my name. If people who come to my blog don't immediately associate my name with it, I'm not reaching that second goal.

I've heard time and time again that for writers, your name is your brand. Today, that message finally hit home.

So, my friends, think about it. Are you getting your name out there the way you want?

I titled my blog with my name when I first made it. I love quirky blog names, but truthfully speaking, I rename everybody's blogs to their actual names when I add them to my Google Reader. It's much too difficult trying to juggle associating two names to one blog.

Ah, man! And I just finished making a nifty set of blog cards. Still, that is an excellent point. Thank you for posting this, since I could not be there today. I've always had my name as a tagline under my blog title. The question is, can I maintain that? It'll be hard to let go. I'll have to think about it. See you there! :)

Wow.... this is an EXCELLENT point. I'm changing my blog name now too - I want to be hitting that second goal! Though I'll probably do it next week cause I'll get my friend to make me a pretty new banner too!

Good point! This is exactly why I deleted my old blog and made a new one with my name in the url.

Good timing! Just last night I decided I'm going to take some time this weekend to FINALLY get my own blog going...and picking a name was really slowing me down. And now I don't have to worry about it!

Hey, thanks for this post. I've been feeling like naming my blog with my name was lame. Now I feel a sudden loss of lameness. Sweet. :)

Something I didn't think about. Especially since I'm not yet published, but it's not too early to be thinking about things like this. Thanks!

Hrm, that's a pretty powerful example Shallee. Thanks for sharing. I may have to consider rearranging some of my blog header too.

That's an excellent point. No whining now, just do it! There will be a lot of changes in blogger land in the next few days! Watch out!

This was a good post! I've actually been thinking a lot about this--what I want to do with my blog lately. I started my blog to talk about writing and got sucked further into the book blogger world--which is easy/bad/good for a writer. What's that balance for me? I really need to figure that out.
