Healthy Writer's Club: Even Breaks are Productive

Oct 19, 2012

Welcome to The Healthy Writers Club! As writers, we hear a lot about the "butt in chair" tactic, which is great for our manuscripts, but not so great for the actual butt in the chair. Every Friday, I'll be posting about how healthy I've been that week and how it connects to writing. If you're game to join the fun, you can run, walk, bike, make a healthy dinner, play tag with your kids, etc. Then, you post about it on Friday (or whenever you want). Sign up here!

Just a quick post today because I'm on VACATION! I only ran once this week, but I figure with all the walking I'm doing at Disneyland, I'm getting plenty of exercise. The fun thing about taking a break is that even breaks can be productive-- for both exercise and writing.

Writing breaks often give me time to refuel, and get some new, fun ideas. Breaks are necessary in exercise to let your body breathe a little, even if the break comes in the form of varying your exercise. I don't run every day. Some days I don't exercise at all, and others I do yoga, take a walk with my son, or gambol around Disneyland. :)

In unrelated news, if you've seen the sidebar picture, you'll know I'm now (dun-duh-duh-DUN!) a redhead! Like The Doctor, I've always wanted to be ginger.

Not going to lie, I'm totally digging it. Who knew changing my hair color could change my outlook on life? Not that my outlook was bad before...but I'm just having a lot of fun at the moment!

So, my friends, do you take breaks from your exercise? What about your writing? Any fun changes in your world?

I often take breaks when my writing gets too troublesome. The second I take a shower or leash up the dog for a walk, ideas start flowing again!

I like your healthy writer's club. Because 1. I'm the most unhealthy writer there is. I drink coke and eat candy all day long. But that's soon to change!

I actually exercised more this week thanks to this club so I'm so grateful for that. Just have to keep it up now.

Hope you're having a blast at Disneyland! :)

Let me tell you that I love your pic, Shallee. Long hair really suits you. You look like a Diva.

I have been exercising a lot. No break for me for a few days. Its BIC time.

We both took some breaks this week in the exercise arena, although I'm not walking around Disney. Ugh.

It is important to take breaks. It helps clear the mind and gather perspective.

Have a good weekend!

Your new hair color is so pretty. As for healthy writer's club, I try to go for a run or do yoga 4 or 5 times a week to get my butt up out of the chair :)

Oh Disney. Yeah, I was exhausted after a couple days there. Have fun!

I work out at the gym four - five times a week, but certainly wouldn't do it every day. Our bodies need a break for muscles to heal.
Enjoy your vacation!

I actually started a Detox last week. I stared to eat on Monday, but only fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. No meat for a bit, and lots and lots and lots of water. I already feel so much better! Have fun at Disneyland!

Lovin' the red hair!!! I wonder if the next doctor will be ginger? That would be fun.

CUTE HAIR. Congrats on making ginger look natural, which is impressively hard to do. :)

I'm enthused about being able to say your name right. I've been pronouncing it wrong as long as I've known you! The trouble with knowing people only via the internet, I guess. :P

Love the hair color, maybe that's what I need.
No, what I need is a vacation, on the beach somewhere, and I don't care if it's cold. The Oregon Coast sounds lovely.
Feeling melancholy, I need a break!

Still keeping on keeping on.

I have got a rule - 30 minutes of exercise every day, unless I am so tired my body aches all over (as it did yesterday). What kind of exercise is up to me... wahatever sounds great. Running, yoga, strength training, a long walk, bellydancing, ...

Well done everyone for continuing to be more active. I have certainly been more aware of how long I have spent sitting on my butt or backside, as we say in UK.

I dug out my exercise DVDs and actually used them, went on long hikes and went on foot rather than take the car. Result: Felt more energetic but put on 1/2 lb in weight!

Sounds like you're having fun keeping busy. A break from writing stories does fuel that creative fire with new energy.

Disneyland definitely counts as exercise. And I love the ginger look, too. It looks natural. Are you fiestier now? Have fun at Disneyland!

Breaks are great! I've been on a long one from blogging and am especially glad to be back at it. Have a great time in Disneyland! Hugs!

Sounds like a great group...I'm in! I used to exercise like a fiend, but the last few months I've had to take it easy due to health problems...still get a couple workouts a week in though, things just go so much better when you're active! I dyed my hair red once too (I'm a natural blonde), and I found it so refreshing and fun..have fun at Disneyland!
