The Healthy Writers Club

Sep 7, 2012

UPDATE: You can sign up officially for The Healthy Writers Club by going here! That way we can all find each other.

I recently went a little crazy and decided I want to do a half-marathon next spring. I've got a training schedule all planned out, my brother-in-law convinced to run it with me, and brand-spankin' new running shoes.

I've been running all week, and I feel great. That got me thinking. As writers, we hear a lot about the "butt in chair" tactic, which is great for our manuscripts, but not so great for the actual butt in the chair. So I'm starting something new: The Healthy Writers Club!

Every Friday, I'll be posting about how healthy I've been that week, and I invite you to join me! Of course, that means you need to get out and do something healthy. :) Basically, if you're game, you can run, walk, bike, make a healthy dinner, play tag with your kids, etc. Then, you post about it on Friday (or whenever you want). You can even use this handy-dandy button and link back here, and use my "template" below if you want.

Being healthy is important not just for your body, but your mind. My energy and creativity has increased already, so it's a big plus for my writing too. Here's this week's update:

Stats: Ran 3 miles, did Yoga for 20 minutes
In-flight entertainment favorite: Writing Excuses podcast on Authentic Emotion
Coolest moment: Getting my new shoes! Happy very late birthday to me from my awesome mama.
Hardest moment: The altitude and crazy hills when I ran on Labor Day at my in-laws' cabin.

So, my friends, if you're up for this, feel free to join the Healthy Writers Club! What things do you do to stay healthy?

Good timing! I just finished running on my treadmill. My Kindle fits perfectly at the front of it so I can read and write. Heaven!

Good for you for having healthy goals! A half-marathon is a big undertaking, but you're getting started way ahead of the game. :)

I love this idea! I have some baby weight to lose. I don't see a half marathon in my future but I do want to do something! I'll have to think about it and start next month :)

I'm game! Hubby and I just finished week 4 of the P90X/Insanity hybrid.

I turn music on for 30 minutes and dance around the house with my toddler and baby. It is quite the workout!

I'm totally going to do this. At the beginning of my summer I was going to the gym every day and being super healthy, but as the season wore on I got lazy and, well, I haven't been to the gym in a month. I want to start getting active again and this is really going to motivate me, thanks!

Good luck. I'm impressed. I should get back to exercising...

This is a great idea, Shallee! I've been walking on my treadmill for the past few weeks, but I need to add something else.

Like Jenny Bennett, I need to lose the baby weight too. Gotta get off my butt and get exercising STAT! Thanks for the motivation!

I take dance classes; and on days I'm not dancing I try to walk (or run) around town twice a day.

Thanks for the motivation, Shallee. I have been going a bit slow with both my writing and working out.

I like to stay fit by walking, but I'm not consistent. My fitbit helps to motivate me but your idea will also help me. Thanks

I hope it is all going well with the training.

I am reviewing a YA novel over at mine today. ;O)

Walking the pups and trying to keep the food real has been my focus lately. I love the idea of the healthy writers club. :)

What a great idea! I'll definitely be taking part in this. And good luck training for your half marathon.

This is a great idea!! Alas, I won't be able to post anything because I'm terrible. The most I do is some walking. I hear chocolate can be healthy... ;)

Great idea! I spend way more time sitting than I should!

Shallee, that's a pretty cool idea and need I say very sensible. I was reading something the other day that had some scary stats.

I am one of those persons with a sit-down job and it's downright dangerous the amount of sitting I do on a daily basis. The study I was reading said that people whose jobs consist of standing/walking are likely to live much longer than those of us who sit for most of the day. I definitely need to get back on the exercise wagon.

I'm scatty, but I hope I remember to come back next Friday.

This is awesome, Shallee!! I need to join you! Maybe not this week, because Friday is tomorrow already.... I'm hoping to get my flat fixed on my baby jogger this weekend and then I'm planning to walk while my kids are in lessons (instead of trying to drive back up to the house for half-an-hour to get a couple things done and then drive back -- that makes me frazzled!) I think exercising would help relieve some stress and it would be good for this growing butt-in-chair. :D

Great idea! I love this!!

This is a great idea. We writers definitely need to get off our butts once in a while!

I'm going to sign up for one too. And I'm getting my butt out of the chair. I've been it way too much. Good luck with your training. ;0)

I'm so much better about exercising in the summer when i can run on the cross country trail, not so much come winter when it's cold outside and the path is icy and I shiver just thinking about it! Which is why I'm going to join my local Y this winter. Because you're right: sitting my butt in a chair is great for my writing but not for my butt!

This idea is brilliant. If I joined your club, could I do my posts on Thursday? That would help my schedule lots. :)

This is a great idea, Shallee. Plus, with awesome shoes like those, you could totaly do a half marathon. I did the Rock n Roll half marathon last summer in San Diego. But I got hurt doing the Rugged Maniac after that and was out for about 4 months. I'm just now starting to get into walking. I post over at Run Gwen Run on Fridays. Hope you can stop by:)
